I often get asked about other various approaches to wellness and healing modalities that are beyond “talk therapy”. There is so much out there that people get confused about what they should try or what might be right for them. They ask, what’s “real”?  What's “fake”? There is so much out there. I cannot write an exhaustive blog post of everything that is out there but I will share what a few clients have asked me about in the past couple of months. 

What is Transpersonal Psychotherapy?

Transpersonal psychotherapy is a holistic approach to psychotherapy that goes beyond traditional psychological concepts and explores the spiritual, transcendent, and mystical aspects of human experience. It acknowledges that individuals have a deeper or higher self and seeks to help people connect with this aspect of themselves to achieve personal growth and transformation. Some key features and principles of transpersonal psychotherapy:

  • Spiritual Dimension: Transpersonal therapy recognizes the spiritual dimension of human existence and the importance of exploring and integrating spiritual experiences into the therapeutic process. This can involve exploring questions of meaning, purpose, and connection to something larger than oneself.

  • Holistic Approach: It takes a holistic view of the individual, considering not just their mental and emotional well-being but also their physical, social, and spiritual dimensions. The goal is to achieve a balanced and integrated sense of self.

  • Expanded States of Consciousness: Transpersonal therapy often involves exploring altered states of consciousness, such as meditation, mindfulness, dreams, and even psychedelic experiences, as a means to gain insight and personal growth.

  • Self-Actualization: Similar to humanistic psychology, transpersonal therapy emphasizes the importance of self-actualization – the realization of one's full potential. It aims to help individuals move beyond self-limiting beliefs and behaviors to reach a higher level of self-awareness and self-fulfillment.

  • Mind-Body Connection: This approach recognizes the mind-body connection and considers the impact of physical health and well-being on mental and spiritual health. Techniques like yoga, breathwork, and body-centered practices may be incorporated.

  • Non-Dual Awareness: Transpersonal therapy often explores non-dual awareness, the idea that there is no fundamental separation between the self and the universe or between individuals and others. It seeks to transcend dualistic thinking and experience a sense of unity or interconnectedness.

  • Integration of Spiritual Experiences: For some individuals, transpersonal therapy may involve integrating profound spiritual or mystical experiences into their everyday lives. Therapists help clients make sense of these experiences and incorporate their insights into their personal growth.

  • Eclectic Approach: Transpersonal therapists may use a variety of therapeutic techniques and methods, drawing from different psychological traditions, including psychoanalytic, humanistic, cognitive-behavioral, and experiential approaches.

It's important to note that transpersonal therapy is not for everyone, and it may be more suitable for individuals who are open to exploring the spiritual and mystical aspects of their lives. Additionally, it should be practiced by qualified and experienced therapists who are trained in this approach, as it involves unique techniques and perspectives that may differ from traditional psychotherapy.

Beyond the transpersonal modality.. What is Reiki, Dreamwork?

A licensed therapist, that is legally and ethically bound to practice in the state in which they live. They hold certifications that are required by the state. That is different from other practitioners who might have certifications or deep study within a particular holistic approach like Reiki, astrology, energy work, Jungian dream work analysis. These alternative ways of healing are not sanctioned by the American Psychology Association, medical boards etcetera ... .meaning a person cannot use their insurance for these services but there are some licensed therapists that use these approaches as part of their work. Somatic therapists might include yoga, meditation and breathwork as part of their trained techniques. 

These new ways of healing have been gaining significant attention in recent years as more people seek expanded approaches to overall health, wellness and self-discovery outside of the medical model. Side note, acupuncture, was once a method not seen as anything of value for health benefits, until years of study showed positive results and is now widely accepted as a form of treatment in 1997 in the United States. (The dominant culture is beyond slow, around indigenous practices. Acupuncture has been around for 3000 years. ).

Jungian Dream Analysis

Jungian dream analysis is rooted in the psychology of Carl Gustav Jung, a renowned Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. According to Jung, dreams serve as a bridge between the conscious and unconscious mind, containing valuable insights into our emotional and psychological state. By interpreting symbols, archetypes, and themes within dreams, individuals can gain a deeper understanding of their inner world, unresolved conflicts, and hidden desires. This therapeutic technique helps individuals embrace their subconscious and integrate suppressed aspects of themselves, fostering personal growth and self-awareness. 

Reiki

Originating in Japan, Reiki is a spiritual healing practice that aims to balance the body's energy (ki or chi) and promote relaxation, stress reduction, and overall well-being. Reiki practitioners believe that by channeling healing energy through their hands, they can unblock energy pathways and support the body's natural ability to heal itself. This non-invasive therapy has been used to alleviate physical and emotional ailments and is often complemented by traditional medical treatments.

Tarot Guided Spiritual Readings

Tarot readings involve the use of a deck of tarot cards to gain insights into the past, present, and future of an individual's life. While often associated with fortune-telling, tarot readings are more accurately considered as a tool for self-reflection and personal growth. Each card in the deck carries symbolic meanings, and through the reader's intuition and the client's interpretation, a narrative unfolds, providing guidance and clarity on life's challenges and opportunities.

Family Constellations

Family constellations, developed by Bert Hellinger, is a therapeutic approach that delves into the dynamics and hidden loyalties within a family system. It posits that unresolved issues and traumas from previous generations can unconsciously impact the present generation. During a family constellation session, a group or individual represents family members or elements, allowing the facilitator to observe and resolve underlying conflicts. This process aims to bring harmony and balance to the family system, enabling individuals to find their place within the family's broader context.

Biodecodification

Biodecodification, also known as Biological Decoding, is a therapeutic approach that associates emotional conflicts with physical symptoms or illnesses. It is based on the idea that unresolved emotional traumas and stresses can manifest as physical symptoms in the body. By identifying and understanding the emotional roots of ailments, biodecodification aims to release emotional blockages, promoting healing and restoring balance within the individual.

While these alternative therapies have gained popularity, it's essential for individuals to approach them with an open mind and discernment, seeking qualified practitioners and using them in conjunction with conventional medical advice when necessary.
